James Gunn is one of the busiest men in Hollywood thanks to Marvel and DC.
On Thursday, James Gunn took to his official Twitter page to announce that he is working on a new DC Universe series. The DC Studios co-head didn’t provide any details about the plot of series but said that wrote about one third of the project in a single day. He also revealed that he had two DC Studios meetings on that same day.
In his update, James Gunn also mentioned that he spent part of Thursday working on the visual effects for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. The latest Guardians of the Galaxy movie is his final project for Marvel as his deal with Warner Bros. Discovery makes him exclusive to DC for about four years, beginning in November 2022.
Prior to being hired as the co-head of DC Studios, James Gunn wrote and directed The Suicide Squad and its HBO Max spin-off series Peacemaker. Starring John Cena, Peacemaker was renewed for a second season before the recent DC Universe shakeup at Warner Bros. Discovery, but Gunn appears to be teasing a diffrent series here.
Last month, James Gunn broke that he is also writing the script of the next Superman movie, which is set to focus on a younger version of the DC Comics hero. As such, Henry Cavill won’t be back as Superman. Gunn and his DC Studios partner Peter Safran have been working on a DC Universe roadmap for weeks now, with insiders describing it as a “broad but not blanket reset.”
James Gunn and Peter Safran are now in charge of DC’s film, television and animations efforts at Warner Bros. Discovery, bringing the company’s comic book-related assets under one roof. Gunn is said to be focusing on the creative direction of the DCU while Safran is handling things that are related to business and production.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
