James Cameron is pulling back the curtain on Avatar 3.
During a recent interview with the French newspaper 20 minutes, James Cameron revealed that he plans to introduce a fire-based Na’vi in the third Avatar movie. Cameron has shot most of Avatar 3 and is expected to continue working on the movie after finishing his press duties for The Way of Water, which is currently in theaters.
When asked about what to expect from Avatar 3, James Cameron said that the film features “different cultures from those I have already shown. The fire will be represented by the Ash People. I want to show the Na’vi in a different light because, so far, I have only shown their good sides. In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In Avatar 3, we will do the opposite,” Cameron teased.
The Avatar mastermind went on to add the following: “We will also explore new worlds, while continuing the story of the main characters. I can say that the last parts will be the best. The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the meal. But, obviously, everything will depend on how Avatar 2 is received, if it finds its audience.”
Avatar: The Way of Water has already earned more than $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office. The movie is expected to pass Top Gun: Maverick to become the highest-grossing release of 2022, with analysts predicting that it could even cross the $2 billion mark.
The first Avatar movie remains the highest-grossing release in history with $2.923 billion. The movie was at one-point dethroned by the Marvel Studios feature Avengers: Endgame before a re-release put it back on top of the all-time box office charts.
The Way of Water is rated PG-13 and runs for 3 hours and 12 minutes, making it about 30 minutes longer than the first entry in the Avatar series. The sequel is a hit with critics, as it holds a certified fresh ratting on the review aggregation platform Rotten Tomatoes. Its budget is somewhere between $350 million to $400 million.
Directed by James Cameron from a script he co-wrote with Josh Friedman, The Way of Water stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi and Kate Winslet.
